Man shot dead near the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

US: Two shooting incident that occurred near the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus early Sunday morning has left one person dead and five others wounded said media reports.


According to the Daily Mail, Champaign police said four victims were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a shooting broke out during an apartment party just after 12.30am.

According to the university's alert serviceThe shooting occurred between Third and Fourth streets in Champaign, less than one mile from campus.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the victim as George Korchev of Mundelein, Ill.
Police said one man died from his injuries just after 1am in a nearby hospital.

The injuries sustained by the other three victims’ were not life threatening.

Champaign police said in a statement that the shooting was believed to be related to an argument inside an apartment that spilled onto the street as the five wounded people were not part of the incident.
"The argument transitioned outside where a fight broke out and shots were fired," the police said.

"The victims in the incident were not involved in the fight.  Mr. Korchev was walking near the area when the shots were fired."
Police sent out an alert in Illinois on Sunday morning urging residents to stay away from the area.
