Zimbabwe student drowns at Cyprus beach (updated)

Cyprus: The death of a Zimbabwean student Takudzwa Cheetan Mandivudza who drowned at the Palm Beach in Magus, Cyprus on Friday August 5th has been announced. Before his death, Mandivudza was a student of the Cyprus International University, Cyprus. His body has been deposited at a mortuary in Maguza after an autopsy was carried out on him.

According to reports, Takudzwa was said to be alone at the beach and had drowned in a shallow water with his phones in his pocket

Autopsy reports released by the hospital revealed he died from drowning but there was no proof that he was drunk.

According to a witness, Jon Gorman who was at the beach with his family at the time of the tragic incident, said they had made efforts to save Takudzwa before Ambulance arrived but was too late.
''I was with my family visiting Famagusta Beach when Takudzwa was rescued from the sea. My wife who is a nurse immediately administered first aid until the Ambulance arrived, sadly it was too late to save Takudzwa,'' said Gorman.
Gorman who has since returned to the UK with his family sent his condolences with the families of the diseased.
''I would like to offer by sincere condolences to Takudzwa’s family and friends for their tragic loss.
I have returned to the U.K today (Saturday August 13) with my family and wanted to share with Takudzwa’s family and friends and perhaps to provide some small comfort, that we did everything that was possible to save Takudzwa and were with Takudzwa until help arrived, he wasn’t alone. Our deepest thoughts are with you all.''

  2. I think Jon Gorman has the answers...he said the boy was not alone as stated by the reports. Family members can try to contact Jon.

    1. I fully understand that in these tragic circumstances, family members and friends will have questions and want answers and so I am happy to provide my account of events which I hope will help.

When I was on Famagusta Beach on the day in question,I was part of an organised group of British tourists on a guided tour. A member of the group rescued Takudzwa from the sea which was on the far-east side of the beach that borders Varoshia Beach. This part of the sea was particularly deep and became deep very quickly from the shore line. I can confirm that when Takudzwa was pulled from the sea, he was unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse. My wife and another British tourist applied resuscitation for approx 15 minutes and stopped shortly before the Ambulance arrived. It was my wife’s medical assessment of Takudzwa that there was no benefit to be gained in continuing with resuscitation after this period of time.

There were no lifeguards in the lifeguard tower at the time but I don’t honestly believe their appearance and intervention would have changed the outcome.

I cannot say for how long Takudzwa was unconscious for in the sea, whether this was for 5 minutes or 15 minutes, we will never know. I cannot also explain why Takudzwa was in that particular part of the location.

From speaking to the tourist who assisted my wife and also other British tourists from the tour, they did provide a description of seeing a young man earlier on that matched that of Takudzwa out on the nearby protruding rocks wearing earphones. I would stress that these reports are not a confirmed sighting and may have well related to another person with a similar appearance. If this was though Takudzwa, it is feasible that he was attempting to swim back from the rocks back to the beach. Again, this is only an assumption of what may have happened.

My earlier message was misleading which implied that Takudzwa “was not alone”. I believe he was actually alone on the beach at the time and so my wording was simply to acknowledge that there were people with Takudzwa when rescued from the sea. I am sorry to add any confusion.

I hope my message provides some information and comfort to all concerned in making sense of this tragic accident.

  4. If Takudzwa was trying to swim back to the beach from the protruding rocks, could he have swam to the protruding rocks with his phone in his pocket? Is there another route one could have taken to get to the protruding rocks which Taku could have taken thereby keeping his phone on him? Could one access the protruding rocks by boat and how far are the protruding rocks from the beach?

    Concerned Relative.

  5. To Mr Gorman,
Thank you ever so much for being there for Takudzwa even if there was no more hope. May the Lord richly bless you and your wife.
To concerned relative, let us rejoice that our son's body was found and that someone cared enough to bring him to shore so that his mum and all of us could see him one last time and bury him at home. We will have a lot of questions as a family but we will not be able to answer them - they are for God and He always knows. Takudzwa is home and is at peace with the Lord now. God bless you all.
