Turkey's military returns fire at ISIS targets in Syria after shells hit border town

Turkey: Citing the military, broadcaster NTV says Turkey's military has returned fire at Islamic State targets in northern Syria, after two mortar shells from Syria hit a Turkish border town on Tuesday.

NTV added that the military fired 40 shells at four Islamic State targets in Syria.

Also state-run Anadolu Agency said that two mortar shells hit the town of Karkamis but there were no casualties, and were evidently fired during clashes between Syrian rebels and Islamic State militants in northern Syria.

According to a senior rebel official, Karkamis neighbours the Syrian town of Jarablus, a town the Turkish-backed Syrian rebels are preparing to attack and seize from Islamic State, a move that would thwart Kurdish hopes to expand there.
The mortar shells hit the garden of a property connected to a mosque in Karkamis after striking power lines, said Anadolu.

The reported added that security forces later sealed off the area and warned residents through loudspeaker to stay at home.
