Ten women forced off Cannes beach and fined for wearing burkinis after the Islamic outfits were banned in France
France: Police officers in France has reprimanded at least ten women including young mothers
and grandmothers for wearing burkinis
on a French beach, making them the first set of people to be criminalised since the new law was passed.
The women reprimanded in the Riviera resort of Cannes, were all forced to leave the sand.
Four of the women were fined the equivalent of £32,
while all of them received 'warnings' that will now technically form part of their
criminal records.
Muslim groups had reacted to
such recent development, after which the Mayor of Cannes David Lisnard imposed the 'burkini ban' last week end.
Lisnard said the all-over
swimsuits threatened to provoke people because of the number of terrorist
attacks being carried out by Islamic State in the country.
But instead the group said Mr Lisnard, a
member of the right wing Republican Party, was stirring up Islamophobia.
A Cannes's local council source said the women between the age of 29 to 57, all
accompanied with children, with some wearing the garments while swimming
in the sea, claim they do not believe they are criminals,' adding that they were very upset at the way they
were treated.'
According to the new ruling, 'access to beaches and for swimming is banned to anyone who does not have bathing apparel that respects good customs and secularism.'
The law has already been applied in
two other seaside resorts in France, as others are set to follow suit.
The ban of the garments on the
French island of Corsica comes after a man was harpooned for taking photograph of women wearing the
garments as a resulted of a violent clash between North Africans
and locals.
Meanwhile, the country's Prime
Minister, Manuel Valls, has attacked the burkini for 'not being compatible with the
values of France and the Republic.'
