South Carolina mum 'kills baby by putting him in fridge'

US: A 27-year-old South Carolina mother identified as Angela Blackwell has killed her four-day-old-son by putting him in the refrigerator for three hours, said authorities and has been charged with homicide by child abuse.

During her appearance in court on Tuesday, the judge refused to grant her bail at the early stage of the hearing due to the severity of the charges brought against her.
Blackwell nodded and shook her head, leaving the courtroom a few minutes later without a word.

Blackwell who was arrested on Monday committed the crime on February 27. Investigators said within that time, they have been taking statements and getting forensic tests done on the baby.

 

According to autopsy conducted on the baby, it revealed that the boy, William David Blackwell, died from hypothermia with asphyxiation from being placed in the cold, said Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker.

A first-responders had tried to revive the baby but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Speaking to reporters at his home, the baby's grandfather, Billy Lewis, said Blackwell was sad at the time of her baby's birth, but appeared to be cheered up after her son was born.

``She didn't do it. We don't know who did it, but she didn't do it,'' said Lewis, adding that there were other people in the home, but wouldn't speak on how the baby got into the refrigerator.

The boy's father, Paul Lewis, 35 was not charged in connection to his death.
