Italy holds mass funeral for earthquake vicitms

Italy: A state funeral was held on Saturday for some of the 290 people killed in an earthquake in Italy on Wednesday. Among 35 caskets laid out in a sports hall were small coffins of an 18-month-old baby and a nine-year-old girl, two of the 21 children who are known to have died when the earthquake hit central Italy early Wednesday morning.

"Don't be afraid to bewail your suffering, we have seen so much suffering. But I ask you not to lose your courage," Bishop Giovanni D'Ercole said in a homily in the hall, which was packed with grieving families and the France's top politicians.
Rescuers are still searching through the rubble in Amatrice even as the funeral mass was being held, but they accepted that there is little hope of finding any more survivors.
Nine more bodies including three bodies pulled during the night from the crumpled Hotel Roma were recovered from the town on Saturday, raising the death toll in Amatrice alone to 230.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella flew to Amatrice by helicopter on Saturday before travelling to Ascoli Piceno for the funeral where he was joined by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, parliamentary chiefs and local mayors.
A funeral will be held in Rome, where almost 50 of the dead came from in the coming days.

The names of 181 victims have been released by authorities with the youngest being a five months old and the oldest 93.
