FIFA former president Joao Havelange dies at 100 in Brazil

FIFA: Former FIFA president, Joao Havelange, from Brazil has died at the age of 100. Hanenlage who was FIFA president for two-decades saw the transformation of the football's governing body into a multi-billion dollar entity.

Havelange had been treated for pneumonia in Rio de Janeiro's Samaritano hospital in July. A statement from the hospital said Havelange died on Tuesday morning, but did not state cause of his death.
"The institution supports the family and friends of the sports leader," said the brief statement.
Born on May 8, 1916, Havelange turned 100 this year, just before Rio hosted the Olympic Games.

One of Havelange's major decision as the head of FIFA was expanding the World Cup from 16 to 32 teams. He also made it one of sport's most important events.

FIFA was a tiny organisation with less than a dozen staff when Havelange took over at its Zurich headquarters in 1974.
"I found an old house and $20 in the kitty," Havelange told FIFA's website. "On the day I departed 24 years later, I left property and contracts worth over $4 billion. Not too bad, I'd say." Havelange said.
