Cyprus police discovers largest cocaine haul in Limassol

Cyprus: A 53-year-old man has been arrested in Limassol, Cyprus on Thursday night in connection with 156 kilograms of cocaine tucked inside the fuel tanks of three electricity generators discovered in a customs warehouse in Zakaki, police said on Friday.

Owner of the warehouse where the drugs were found has been arrested as police continue their search for a 44-year-old man who owes the company that imported the generators and commissioned the warehouse to store them.

Police say investigations into the largest ever cocaine haul in Cyprus are continuing “intensively.”

The police acted on a tip off on Thursday, after several days of operation as the drug squad (YKAN) tracked down a hundred packages filled with cocaine.

The police were able to extract all the cocaine packages, weighing a total of 156kg.

In a statement by the head of the drug squad (YKAN) Gavriel Gavriel, the illegal cargo arrived in Cyprus in two shipments, in April and May.
The cargo were shipped from a Latin America country, and arrived in Limassol via a number of European ports.
Answering a question, Gavriel said police believe the cargo's destination was another country, “although we cannot be sure whether part of the quantity [of the cocaine] would have remained here” adding that the drug squad’s operation began a few days ago, in collaboration with “a corresponding agency in another country.”

Later reports revealed that the shipments originated from Chile.
