40 knives removed from man's stomach in Indian

India: 40 knives have been surgically removed by doctors from the stomach of a 42-year-old police constable identified as Surjeet Singh in northern India who had swallowed them over the past two months. See photos below

Singh who was lucky enough to be alive sought medical attention after he began having stomach pain and little appetite and is now recovering in a hospital in Punjab state after undergoing a five-hour operation to remove the knives.

Some of the knife were folded and some with exposed blades up to 18cm long.

 

One of the doctors who was present during the surgery at Amritsar Corporate Hospital, Jatinder Malhotra said the man was seemingly suffering from a psychiatric disorder and is now being counseled.

"This was very unnerving, not witnessed something like this in my career as a doctor."

Doctors said they did not have information about Singh's diagnosis at first. An ultrasound carried out showed a solid object in the shape of a cancer said Malhotra.

According to Reuters, Singh had told doctors that he swallowed 28 knives, but 40 were removed.

"To ensure that there are no knives left, we did a metallic scan. What is astonishing is the fact is that the patient was eating the knives for the last two months," said Malhotra.

Malhotra said Singh suffered from a psychological disorder and reportedly started to swallow the knifes after recovering from a road accident.

Reuters reported Singh as saying;

“I met with an accident in Chandigarh and could not walk properly after that. I used to sit idle and started swallowing down knives,”   “It pained a little.”
