Two men sentenced to death for murder in Kenya

Kenya: Two Kenyan men Jabiri Ali Dzuya and Bwana Mkuu Alwan have been sentenced to death on Friday by a Mombasa high court after they were convicted of  killing four police officers on the eve of national elections in 2013 and also accused of being members of a Kenyan secessionist group.

Prosecutors said Jabiri Ali Dzuya and Bwana Mkuu Alwan were members of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), a movement agitating for the independence of Kenya’s coastal regions.

The accused both denied the charge brought against them, but the court judge Martin Muya, said there was enough evidence to show they had “brutally murdered four officers on duty.”

According to reports by Reuters, the MRC had urged its supporters to boycott the 2013 elections, demanding a separate government for the Indian Ocean coastal regions.

The movement has been outlawed until a 2012 court ruling lifted a ban, and has accused the Kenya government of marginalising the region.

The group had also denied police allegations that it was behind series of attacks on police stations and people from outside the area before the vote.

Their lawyer said he would appeal the court verdict.
