Turkish president Erdogan wants army, spy agency under president control

Turkey: According to a Turkish official, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan wants the Turkish armed forces and the national intelligence agency (MIT) to be brought under the control of the presidency.

Erdogan was cited by television news channels as saying The change would require a constitutional change with backing of the opposition.

The statement comes following a meeting of Turkey's Supreme Military Council (YAS) which is expected to agree a total overhaul of the armed forces following a failed military coup attempt on July 15.

Details of the changes is expected to be announced by Turkish authorities later Thursday.
