Turkey coup: Greece armed forces monitoring Turkey developments

Greece: Greek's armed forces and police chiefs are holding an emergency meetings in Athens to observe the ongoing developments in neighbouring Turkey, said government officials.

Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity early Saturday, said the country's armed forces are being placed in a state of "heightened readiness" and not alert.

According State-run ERT television, it reported that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had been briefed by intelligence and military chiefs on Turkey's coup attempt, including the unusual movements by Turkish armed forces before the attempt became obvious.

Greek foreign minister Nikos Kotzias had to cut short his visit to the Asia-Europe summit in Mongolia on Friday due to the ongoing developments in Turkey.

Officials said Greek prime minister, Tsipras has also discussed the situation in Turkey with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.
