Meet the woman who grows fingernails instead of hair

US: Shanyna Isom, 28 from Memphis USA, is suffering from a weird disease condition that causes her skin to grow human nails out of her hair follicles making her body covered in hard scabs as ‘nails’ replace the hair on her body.
The condition has made Shanya lost all the hair on her head which made her wears a wig and hat to conceal it.

Doctors are still battling to treat the mystery disease which is believed to have stems from an allergic reaction. Shanya was prescribed steroids after suffering an asthma attack in September 2009, and within hours she was ‘itching’ all over her body.
Black bumps later appeared on her legs which made doctors to treat her for everything from eczema to Staphylococcal infection to no avail.
Doctors later discovered that the bumps were human nails two years later in 2011.

Shanya grows 12 times the normal number of skin cells per hair follicle, which suffocate her skin.

‘Where hair grows, nails are growing,’ says Shanyna.

‘They’ve tested me from A to Z and everything was coming back negative.

‘As of right now, I am the only one in the world with my illness.’

The illness has left Shanyna and her family bankrupt.
The family savings accounts are dry and her unpaid medical bills are currently stands at £160,000 ($250,000). She relies on family and friends for financial.
Shanyna has set up the S.A.I Foundation to help raise funds for her treatment but fears she may not be able to continue.

Shanyna hopes the foundation will be able to raise enough money to cover her medical bills and help others in the same condition.

‘If it means me dealing with this to help someone else, I’m willing to go through it.’ she says.
