Russian airmen have died in Syria after their helicopter was shot down
in Syria by Islamic State group fighters on Friday said Russia's
military.
In a statement by the Defence Ministry, the attack took place in the east of the ancient city of Palmyra.
According to the statement, the two Russians airmen were carrying out a test flight in the Homs region with a Syrian Mi-25 helicopter that was loaded with ammunition. It also said IS fighters broke through Syrian forces' lines east of Palmyra at the same time.
The statement added that the Syrian forces had requested the crew help strike the IS fighters. The crew used up its ammunition after the strike and was leaving the scene, when IS fighters shot the helicopter down.
