Indian couple hacked to death over US 22-cent debt

Indian: An Indian couple has been hacked to death by a 60-year-old shopkeeper in Northern Indian after they failed to pay a debt of 22 US cents police said on Friday.
The grocery store keeper attacked the middle-aged couple from Dalit caste in Uttar Pradesh state on their way to work on Thursday morning demanding that they pay him his money.
Mainpuri district police investigating officer Arun Kumar, said;

"The shopkeeper demanded money but they pleaded to be able to pay it later. He became enraged and attacked them with an axe,"

Police said the couple had bought goods from the shop last week and promised to pay the shopkeeper within a few days.

"Their refusal to pay made him angry and he killed them," Kumar said.

Police said the shopkeeper was arrested immediately after the incident and the murder weapon recovered from him.
The victims were members of the Dalit social group formerly called the ''untouchable'' which is at the lowest level of Indian's caste system while the shopkeeper is said to be a member of the upper caste group.
