Greek Cypriots marks 42nd invasion anniversary as Turkish Cypriots mark July 20th peace and freedom day

Cyprus: Greek Cyprus on Wednesday marked the 42nd anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion with air raid sirens and memorial services through out the entire south in honour of victims of the war in 1974 as The Turkish Cypriot part of the divided island held a memorial ceremony in Nicosia to mark the July 20th Peace and Freedom Day.
Greek Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades attended a memorial service in honour of the army officers and soldiers killed during the invasion at the Tomb of Makedonitissa in Nicosia, where he also laid a wreath.
He later attended a memorial service held at the church of Faneromeni in central Nicosia.
In North Cyprus, a memorial ceremony was held in front of the Atatürk Monument in Nicosia to mark the 20th July Peace and Freedom Day.
The event began with a wreath laying, a period of silence after which the National Anthem was played.

President Mustafa Akinci took part in a special book signing to mark the day.
