General who led failed Turkish coup charged with treason as rebels are threatened with death penalty

Turkey: One of Turkey's most senior army general has been charged with treason and may face death penalty as eight leading members behind the plot to overthrow the government have fled to Greece following the failed coup.

Rebel leader General Erdal Ozturk who was in command of the Third Army Corps was marched throught the streets after the coup which saw hundred killed in Istanbul and Ankara on early Saturday morning and has been detained.

Ozturk's men attempted to seize strategic locations across Turkey when they were confronted by thousands of unarmed civilians who came out in support of Presdient Recep Erdogan.

Erdogan has said the perpetrators could face the death penalty even though Turkey scraped capital punishment as part of its attempts to join the European Union

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has now issued arrest warrants for 2745 judges and prosecutors with 132 already detained.
