Football paper round: Juventus eye Javier Mascherano as midfield replacement for Paul Pogba
Juve wants Mascherano if Pogba goes
Paul Pogba has been the dominant figure in the summer's transfer speculation whirl so far -- but those weary of his name will be happy to know today's lead for Transfer Talk one isn't completely about him.
It's to do with who might replace the France international at Juventus if he goes to Manchester United or Real Madrid -- and the main name in the frame is Javier Mascherano, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.
The Serie A champions want the Barcelona man to fill the large gap that would be left in their midfield by a £100 million or so Pogba move.
Corriere dello Sport says that Argentina international Mascherano, once of West Ham and Liverpool, could be tempted to Juve despite having voiced a desire to stay at Barcelona.
But just in case he isn't, other names in the frame include Chelsea's Nemanja Matic, Mateo Kovacic of Real Madrid and Inter's Marcelo Brozovic.
Moyes hopes for Januzaj reunion
Remember when Adnan Januzaj was going to become the next big thing?
New Sunderland manager David Moyes, who gave Januzaj his debut at Manchester United, does -- and he wants to bring the winger to the Stadium of Light on loan.
Januzaj, 21, returned to the sidelines at United after a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund last season was cut short.
The Belgian made only six appearances during his time in Germany, and the Mail reports that Moyes hopes to rekindle his spark at Sunderland.
And where did Januzaj make that full debut in the manager's United days? At Sunderland, that's where, scoring twice in a victory for the visitors.
Moyes hopes Januzaj can help achieve his ambitions for "a big club we need to take forward."
Former Aston Villa winger Charles N'Zogbia, training with the squad with a view to a move, could also join.
There's a Chil in the air at Liverpool
Liverpool haven't given up hope of signing Leicester defender Ben Chilwell and are going to make another offer for him, the Sun says.
It reports that England under-21 international Chilwell could come in as Brad Smith heads out to Bournemouth, with Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp set to offer around £8 million for him.
Chilwell, who has also interested Arsenal, has been offered a new five-year deal at Leicester -- but Liverpool are confident they can persuade him to leave the Premier League champions.
The left-back played for Championship side Huddersfield on loan last season, and featured in the Foxes' friendly against Scottish champions Celtic at the weekend.
Varane going nowhere
Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane is one of Europe's hottest young prospects and has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in in the past.
The defender has stressed, however, that he has no intention of leaving the Bernabeu this summer:
Chase for super Mario goes on
His Sporting Lisbon president might have said he's going nowhere this summer -- but the Sun reports that Joao Mario might not be staying after all.
The Portugal international, who helped his country to glory at the European Championship in France, is wanted by Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan.
Joao Mario was conspicuous by his absence as Sporting lost to Lyon in a friendly on Saturday -- and the Sun reckons that means transfer business could be afoot.
Earlier this month, reports suggested that a move to Inter for the 23-year-old was drawing closer. And neither United nor Chelsea have given up, despite Sporting president Bruno De Carvalho telling O Jogo that his club "do not sell our best players."
He added that "it may be that clubs are interested in Joao Mario, but that does not concern us." But if the Sun's hunch is right, it might be concerning him a bit more before the window closes.
Stoke and Palace battle for Berahino
The battle for Saido Berahino goes on (and on), with Stoke and Crystal Palace ready to "take it to the wire" for the West Brom striker, says a breathless Mirror.
Stoke had seemed favourites to sign Berahino (who, lest we forget, had seemed destined for Tottenham Hotspur last summer) before the Eagles, er, swooped with a £20 million offer.
But Potters boss Mark Hughes "is set to launch a counter-bid," according to the report, and Stoke will up their previous offer of £17 million.
If that succeeds Berahino could be one of three new faces, with deals for Welsh Xavi Joe Allen -- a title bestowed upon him by his former Swansea and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers -- and Ramadan Sobhi close to completion.
The Mirror says Stoke are about to tie up the Allen move after having a bid worth some £13 million accepted by Liverpool.
Sobhi, who had also reportedly interested Arsenal and Fiorentina, is set to complete his switch from Al Ahly after a £3.5 million offer was approved.
Other news:
- Could roving striker Emmanuel Adebayor be bound for Serie A side Cagliari? Yes he could, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
It reports that Adebayor, a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace when his short-term deal expired at the end of last season, is one of two players interesting the newly-promoted club.
The other is Sulley Muntari, also available on a free after his departure from Al-Ittihad.
- Although reports in Italy have said Roma defender Kostas Manolas could be on his way to the Premier League -- the latest, in Gazzetta dello Sport, links him with Manchester United -- his club president expects him to stay.
James Pallotta told Sky Sport Italia: "He is happy here. He has a contract. Why shouldn't he stay?
