Football Paper Round: Atletico Madrid want Kevin Gameiro after Diego Costa deal falls through
Atleti turn attentions to Gameiro
Talk of a potential Atletico Madrid return for Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been around since the previous season, but it's time to stop that talk, the Mirror said. It reported that the idea of an Atleti move for Costa is old-fashioned nowadays because the Spain international has been replaced as Diego Simeone's top target by prolific Sevilla striker Kevin Gameiro.
Gameiro, who scored 29 goals last season -- a haul that saw him attract interest from Barcelona -- would cost around £35 million.
Atletico "will call a halt to their pursuit of Costa" if he arrives, the Mirror said, adding that new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte's reluctance to sell the forward "forced them to look elsewhere."
Chelsea look to Tevez, Koulibaly
It seems to be a case of you win some, you lose some, as far as Chelsea's transfer plans.
Lose some? Well, that concerns Carlos Tevez -- once managed by Conte at Juventus -- who has said the Blues are interested in signing him from Boca Juniors.
The 32-year-old former West Ham, Manchester United and Manchester City star, linked with a Hammers return earlier in the summer, has been "tracked" by both Chelsea and Napoli, the Mirror reported. But Argentina international Tevez has said his aim is to end his playing days with boyhood club Boca.
And win some? That, the Sun said, is Napoli central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, set to arrive at Stamford Bridge in a £37 million transfer.
Everton and Juventus have also been keen on the 25-year-old, but the Sun reported that he is London-bound after rejecting a new Napoli deal.
On Monday, Koulibaly's agent, Bruno Satin, told Radio CRC that he "didn't get the feeling that we are at the stage where we can reach an agreement" and added: "The player still wants to leave."
Everton keen on Arnautovic switch
Stoke might have been boosted by the double signing of Liverpool's Joe Allen and Al Ahly winger Ramadan Sobhi on Monday, but here comes a development that will leave them feeling a lot less chirpy.
The Mail reported that Everton are poised to table a bid for Marko Arnautovic, who has a year left on his Potters contract but has yet to agree a new deal.
That situation has alerted Goodison Park manager Ronald Koeman, who wants to add the Austria international to his attack but could yet find that there's a fly in the ointment.
That's because, the Mail said, Arnautovic wants £80,000 per week wages, a demand that, it claims, could see the 27-year-old "price himself out of a move," despite having a clause in his contract that means he could leave Stoke for £12.5 million.
If an Everton deal were to be agreed on, the Potters could put the funds generated toward their planned increased offer for West Brom striker Saido Berahino, as they attempt to fend off Crystal Palace's interest.
Liverpool target thrown to the Wolves?
Benfica midfielder Anderson Talisca is facing a choice, according to the Star. Does he move to Liverpool, or does he go to Wolverhampton Wanderers?
The Star, citing reports in Portugal, said Benfica have agreed to sell the 22-year-old, who would command a fee of around £20 million. But he has not amassed enough international appearances the past two years to enable him to automatically play in the Premier League, and that could mean work permit difficulties are looming.
You might not be surprised to hear that Talisca is keener on a move to the English top flight than he is on one to the less glamorous world of the Championship, but Wolves could have an advantage because a move to the second tier "is less likely to be blocked."
Previous reports have suggested that the player would need to be "judged to be an exceptional talent by a panel of experts to seal a move to Anfield," as the FA responds to any work permit application.
Other News
- Liverpool's Brad Smith is poised to wrap up his move to Bournemouth for £6 million, the Liverpool Echo said, but his replacement will not be Leicester's Ben Chilwell.
The Echo said the 22-year-old Smith, who has made 11 senior Liverpool appearances, has agreed on personal terms with the south coast side and will undergo a medical later this week. Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp will end his pursuit of the highly-rated Chilwell, who is now likely to sign a new deal with the Premier League champions, amid doubts about how much he wanted to join Liverpool.
- Speaking of left-backs, West Ham boss Slaven Bilic would not be looking to sign one under normal circumstances, but the loss of Aaron Cresswell for up to four months has forced his hand. The Mirror reported that Bilic will go into the market to find cover for Cresswell, who suffered a knee injury during the Hammers' friendly win over Karlsruher this weekend. The defender, due to see a specialist to determine whether surgery will be necessary, is unlikely to return to first-team action before December.
