Breaking!!! Turkish military takes control of Turkey
In a statement sent by email on Friday, the military said all of Turkey's existing foreign relations would be maintained and that the rule of law would remain the primary concern.
Turkish prime minister had earlier said a military faction within the army had attempted to seize power but that they would be pushed back and that it was wrong to call it a coup.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call early Saturday morning said he still remain the president of the country and the head of the army, calling for the people to take to the streets in protests against the coup.
"We will overcome this," Erdogan said, speaking on a video call adding that the coup plotters would pay a heavy price.
A government official disclosed that Erdogan was speaking from Marmaris on the Turkish coast where he had been on holiday.
Erdogan said he would return quickly to Ankara.
Gun shots and loud explosions were heard in Ankara, as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead.
Government spokesman Cemalettin Hasimim referring to sections of the military behind the coup attempt said;
"We know they have been acting outside the chain of command,"
"But forces of democracy have managed to take the situation back under control. The parliament will get together in half an hour."
