10 Arrested in Brazil over Olympic terror threat

Brazil: 10 people were on Thursday detained in Brazil by Federal police in the southern states of Sao Paulo and Parana after they allegedly pledge allegiance to the Islamic State group on social media. The group who are all Brazilian citizen were in contact via Whatsapp and Telegram but don't know each other personally.
Speaking to journalist in Brasilia, Brazilian Minister of Justice Alexandre de Moraes said that 10 people had been arrested on suspicion of belonging to a group supporting ISIS and two others were being sought for.
"Those involved participated in an online group denominated 'the defenders of Sharia' and were planning to acquire weapons to commit crimes in Brazil and even overseas," Moraes said.

"It was an absolutely amateur cell, with no preparation at all, a disorganized cell,"

Moraes said police reacted because the group had been discussing the use of weapons and guerilla tactics to possibly embark on an attack during the Rio Olympics beginning August 5.

Moraes said the group do not have direct contact with IS but most of its members made "pro forma" declarations of allegiance to the militant Islamist group.

Moraes added that there were no specific targets for attack.
