School girl jailed for cheating in her exam in India

India: A 17 year old school girl, Ruby Rai from Bihar, Indian has been sent to jail for cheating in her exams after she failed a retest.

Rai who came top in the state exams was interviewed by a TV reporter this month, where she said political science ''a subject she was studying'' was about cooking and also failing to spell “political science” correctly.

Authorities became suspicious after the video of the interview went viral, and she was made to resit her exam, but was arrested after she failed. her original results were also withdrawn.
Rai was sent to jail on Sunday till July 8 by the court magistrate after she appeared in court.

An order to arrest other students who are suspected to be cheating have been issued.
Bihar Senior superintendent of police, Manu Maharaj said;
“We have now arrested a total of 18 people including Rai”
Authorities in the poverty stricken state have come under huge pressure to crack down on exam malpractice during this year crucial school-leaving exams.

Despite the arrest of dozens of officials, police, and parents during the crackdown on exam malpractice in 2015, exam cheating seems to have increased in 2016.
According to reports, investigators were quoted as saying that schools and other officials were allegedly demanding huge sums of money this year in return for good exam results.
