Prince and Muhammad Ali honoured at US BET awards night

Celebrities: Stars in a series of performance at the Black Entertainment Television awards on Sunday paid tribute to late singer Prince, while veteran actor Samuel L Jackson was also honored for lifetime achievements.
The broadcast which was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson from Los Angele' Microsoft Theater saw several entertainers from Erykah Badu and the Roots to Stevie Wonder, Dave Chapelle and Jennifer Hudson, who sang Prince's hits song, "Purple Rain".
Prince died in April at his home in Minnesota at age of 57.

Actor Jamie Foxx and Laila the daughter of Muhammad Ali also honored the boxing legend, who died earlier this month at 74, in a special tribute.

Samuel L Jackson, while receiving BET's Lifetime Achievement Award to honor musicians, used the opportunity to pay tribute to fellow honoree Jesse Williams, who received the Humanitarian Award, calling the "Grey's Anatomy" star " the closest thing I've heard to a 1960s activist."

Top awards for best actor and actress were handed to Michael Jordan and Taraji Henson respectively, while Bryson Tiller was named best new artist and as best male R&B pop artist. Rihanna won best female R&B pop artist.
Drake & Future won best group, Beyonce's "Formation" won the video of the year award, and Drake and Nicki Minaj won the award for best male and female hip hop artist of the year.
Serena Williams and Stephen Curry won the awards for sportswoman and sportsman of the year.
Beyonce appearing alongside Kendrick Lamar performed ''Freedom."
