Oscar Pistorius says ‘Reeva wouldn’t want me to waste my life behind bars’

South Africa: Former Paralympian, Pistorius believes Reeva Steenkamp wouldn't want him to spend the rest of his life in prison. In an interview with a South African Television network to be broadcasted on Friday, Oscar Pistorius expressed his fear of going back to jail and said he thinks Reeva Steenkamp, wouldn't want him to waste his life behind bars.

Pistorius was found guilty in 2014 for the murder of girlfriend Steenkamp, a verdict that was overturned by South Africa’s Supreme Court in December 2015 following his release into house arrest.

Pistorius said he feels the same pain as Steenkamp’s other loved ones.

“I can smell the blood. I can feel the warmness of it on my hands,” Pistorius said.
“And to know that that’s your fault, that that’s what you’ve done.
“And I understand the pain people feel, that loved her and miss her. I feel that same pain. I feel that same hate for myself.”

Pistorius also added that if given the opportunity to redeem himself, he would like to give back to the community.

“I don’t want to go back to jail, I don’t want to have to waste my life sitting there, I would like to help the less fortunate, like I did in my past. I would like to believe that if Reeva could look down upon me, she would want me to live that life.”

Pistorius said he “saw the pain” his action has caused adding that most of the friends he shared with Steenkamp “don’t speak to me any more”.
He talked about a woman shouting at him in a supermarket. He said he put his groceries down and left.

Pistorius insists that Steenkamp’s death was an accident because he thought that a thief was breaking into the apartment.
Pistorius statement were rejected by prosecutors as lies stating that he killed Steenkamp after a fight as a result of his jealousy over Steenkamp's ex-boyfriend.
Prosecutors account said Steenkamp had ran to the bathroom, locking herself in when she was chased by Pistorius who first attempted to break the door with a cricket bat before returning with his gun, shooting into the door at point-blank range.
