Non-binary now a legally recongnized gender in US
US: A circuit court in Oregon has ruled that residents of the state can now legally change their gender and identify themselves as “nonbinary,” making Oregon the first state to acknowledge Nonbinary as a gender. (Nonbinary is a term used by an individual who does not want to be identified as male or female.)
The ruling by court judge, Amy Holmes Hehn on Friday, came about after military veteran Jamie Shupe petitioned the court in April to legally change their gender (Jamie uses the pronoun “they” rather than “he” or “she,” and prefers to use only their first name 'Jamie') to non-binary.
Jamie was born male, but began taking hormone treatments to transition to a female. Jamie noticed during the treatments that they(he) no longer identified as female, but also didn’t identify as male. As a result, they(he) applied to legally change their(his) gender designation from “female” to “non-binary,”
In an interview with Jamie, Jamie said;
"I was assigned male at birth due to biology,"
"I'm stuck with that for life. My gender identity is definitely feminine. My gender identity has never been male, but I feel like I have to own up to my male biology.
Being non-binary allows me to do that. I'm a mixture of both. I consider myself as a third sex."
"Male and female are the traditional categories, but they fail to properly categorize people like me. So I challenged that,".
