US order public schools to allow transgender students access to restrooms
In a statement by the Attorney General Loretta Lynch accompanying the directive, “There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex,”.
“This guidance gives administrators, teachers and parents the tools they need to protect transgender students from peer harassment and to identify and address unjust school policies.”
The order comes amid a legal standoff between the Obama government and the state of North Carolina over a controversial “bathroom bill” which requires people to use bathrooms according to their biological sex
In a statement by Education Secretary, John King Jr. he said "No student should ever have to go through the experience of feeling unwelcome at school or on a college campus''.
"We must ensure that our young people know that whoever they are or wherever they come from, they have the opportunity to get a great education in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and violence.
Letters will be sent to schools in regards with the directive in an attempt to end discrimination against students who want to use a different toilet against the gender stated on their educational records.
