Doctors in shock after removing condom inside woman's appendix

Doctors were left shell shocked after they discover a condom inside a 26 year old woman's appendix when trying to save her life after she had complained of severe stomach pain and loss of appetite.

The incident which happened in Cameroon, according to report, the woman came to the hospital complaining of pain and sensitivity on the right side of her pelvis, which made her unable to eat and feverish.

 

Doctors conducted a scan on her which revealed her abdomen was swollen with fluid which might be as a result of appendicitis.

 

She was transferred to the theatre for emergency surgery to remove the infected organ before it ruptured. Doctors were stunned after cutting her only to see the unexpected. They discovered her appendix had a piece of condom stuck inside it.

 

‘We blindly dissected the appendix and found an incomplete piece of rubbery material which was consistent with a condom,’ said the doctors, describing the case in the Journal of Medical Case Reports.

 

The patient confirmed she had accidentally swallowed a condom two weeks before and this happened while she was with her boyfriend. The sheath had become loose and accidentally slipped down her throat, she said.

 

Five days later she discovered pieces of the condom in her faeces but did not sought for medical help nor did she think her symptoms were due to the incident. 

 

Doctors believe the condom was torn into fragments as it traveled through her gastrointestinal tract, with part of it becoming lodged in her appendix.
