Cyprus Update: EU is a "safety valve" for a reunified Cyprus

Cypriot Government Spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides has stated, on the occasion of Europe Day on Monday, that “Cyprus joins its voice with the entire European family in celebrating the vision for European integration.”
Europe celebrates the Schuman Declaration, on May 9, 1950, which constitutes the foundation of the structure of the EU.

“The Republic of Cyprus, as a full member state, contributes to the efforts for European integration and for the promotion of the objectives of the EU in regional and international issues,” added Christodoulides.

Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, “continues to be an open wound in the European structure, experiencing for 42 years now the tragic consequences of division and military occupation,” the Government Spokesperson continued.

“A solution to the Cyprus problem which will be fully consistent with the European acquis and the fundamental principles and values, on which the EU is based, will safeguard its viability and functionality,” remarked Christodoulides.

“To this end, the more active and decisive role that the EU has undertaken in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem constitutes a safety valve in a reunified Cyprus for the safeguarding of the human rights and the basic freedoms of all the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,” he concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.
